We're all familiar with the performance potential of turbochargers. Ford's EcoBoost lineup of powerplants use the exhaust-powered blowers to give small-displacement engines the performance of their less-efficient, naturally aspirated counterparts.
Ford engineers would love to give owners all the power they can deliver, but Ford needs to keep cars out of dealers' service departments. So Ford tasks their engineers to include a large tuning safety margin against poor fuel, plugged filters, and owner mechanical negligence.
To protect their products against not-so savvy owners, there's power hidden in the tuning of turbocharged engines and the performance addicts at Livernois Motorsports have found it.
Livernois Motorsports offers their MyCalibrator Touch device that not only installs their custom tunes in vehicles like the Twin Turbo 2.7L EcoBoost Fusion Sport used for our test, but the MyCalibrator Touch can read and clear diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).
Livernois Motorsports developed tunes for the 2.7L EcoBoost Fusion that cover a wide range of fuels, including 91 and 93 octane. Livernois claims peak-to-peak gains of over 90 horsepower and 80 lb-ft of torque! Livernois also modifies the automatic transmission's torque management and shift behavior, improve throttle response, and revise the top speed limiter.
We tried the MyCalibrator to install Livernois' latest tune for 2.7L EcoBoost Fusion. Even with the 87-octane tune, the car was more responsive and the automatic transmission felt great. With a tank full of fresh 93 octane, we did a little 60-foot time testing. After foot braking to build boost, our 60-foot time improved by three tenths of a second, or fourteen percent. That's really impressive for our little family hauler!
We found the Livernois MyCalibrator Touch to be an easy-to-use method to squeeze more fun from our Fusion!
The Livernois MyCalibrator Touch is a hand-held, touch screen tuner and OBDII diagnostic tool from the Ford experts at Livernois Motorsports and Engineering.
The Livernois MyCalibrator Touch plugs into a late-model Ford's OBDII port.
In order for the Livernois MyCalibrator Touch to communicate with our Fusion's computer, we powered up the car without starting the engine.
Besides serving as a tool to load a tune, the Livernois MyCalibrator Touch has a lot of other useful features, including displaying and clearing codes, data logging, and gauges. Another handy feature of the Livernois MyCalibrator Touch is its speedometer calibration function available for some vehicles, which allows you to correct the speedometer for different final drive ratios or wheel and tire size changes.
First we loaded the Livernois performance tune for our 2.7L EcoBoost Fusion. To do so, we selected "preloaded tunes."
We chose the Livernois 93 octane tune for our EcoBoost Fusion.
Soon, the Livernois MyCalibrator Touch finished loading the tune into our Fusion's computer.
Before heading out on the road for a little testing, we explored the other features of the Livernois MyCalibrator Touch.
A handy feature is the Livernois MyCalibrator Touch's "datalog" function. These logs can be recorded and played back for future reference. Livernois can even configure the device to grab more in-depth data to provide to them if needed.
The Livernois MyCalibrator Touch can record several channels of data from the engine and transmission. We can later analyze this data to solve problems or make gauge other performance improvements.
Our Fusion's on-board computer relays problems it detects with Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). The Livernois MyCalibrator Touch can read, display, and clear these codes when present.
The Livernois MyCalibrator Touch didn't find any codes for us to clear. Good!
Once on the road, we could immediately feel a huge jump in torque, improved throttle response, and better transmission shifting. No wonder. Livernois claims peak-to-peak gains of over 90 horsepower and 80 lb-ft of torque! What's equally impressive is the area under the torque curve. No wonder our Fusion feels so good!
Without an all wheel drive dyno at our disposal, we did a little "real world" 60-foot time testing of the Livernois 93 octane tune for our 2.7L EcoBoost Fusion. We dropped our 60-foot time by 0.3 seconds, which was a fourteen percent improvement. Maybe our Fusion will be a future bracket racer
