Nothing updates the look and feel of your interior than a new steering wheel. Unfortunately, those wanting to update their steering wheel in 1990-1993 Mustangs had limited options that retained the cars’ steering-wheel-mounted air bags.
The Mustang specialists at Latemodel Restoration Supply (LMR.com) have expanded their steering wheel lineup to include a racing-inspired steering wheel, dubbed the FR350, for air bag-equipped Fox-body Mustangs. Its styling is a nod to the wheels offered on modern super Mustangs, including the Shelby GT350.
The steering wheel on this 1991 Mustang GT was faded, worn, and crusty. Sold under Latemodel Restoration Supply’s SVE brand, the FR350 steering wheel features three materials joined with high-quality stitching: simulated black leather, black micro-suede, and a red sight line. Not only do the materials feel fantastic, but the fatter grip gives a meatier feel that feels satisfying in the driver’s hands.
We complimented our steering wheel with a matching shift knob for our five-speed. The stock plastic knob was worn and shiny, but the SVE shift knob is a perfect fit for the look and feel of our interior.
The SVE FR350 steering wheel accepts the stock air bag, horn buttons, and cruise control switches. The installation was straightforward and the fit and finish of the FR350 wheel and shift knob was excellent.
After installing the SVE FR350 steering wheel and a new shift knob, everything our hands touch while driving our 1991 Mustang GT feels like new. It’s like walking in a fresh pair of sneakers!
The leather on the steering wheel and plastic shift knob on this 1991 Mustang GT were worn smooth. The air bag limited our aftermarket steering wheel options.
The steering wheel’s leather was cracked and faded from decades of use and sunlight.
Fortunately for us, Latemodel Restoration Supply offers their FR350 steering wheel for 1990-1993 Mustangs equipped with air bags. We paired the FR350 steering wheel with an SVE black 5-speed shift knob to freshen up the feel of our 1991 Mustang’s controls.
The FR350 steering wheel is wrapped with simulated black leather and black micro-suede with a grip that’s thicker than stock.
There’s even a racy red sight line sewn into the top of the wheel.
The plastic of our shift knob was worn completely smooth, making it slippery. Time for a replacement.
The SVE 5-speed shift knob is covered in simulated black leather and has the proper shift pattern molded into the top surface.
First, we disconnected the negative battery cable to disarm the air bag system.
Then, we removed the two steering column trim screws and separating the trim halves.
Next, we removed the four 10mm nuts retaining the air bag to the steering wheel.
Then, we unplugged the air bag.
With the air bag removed, we separated the connecter for the cruise control and horn buttons.
Then, we removed the steering wheel bolt.
Using a steering wheel removal tool, we pulled the wheel off the steering shaft.
Next, we carefully pried the electrical harness cover from the steering wheel.
After carefully prying off the button trim covers, we removed the cruise control buttons.
Using a small screw driver, we carefully pushed the steering wheel buttons toward the center of the wheel and pried them out.
After feeding the horn button wire through the steering wheel spoke, we installed the buttons in the FR350 steering wheel.
Using the factory screws, we fastened the cruise control buttons to the FR350 steering wheel and installed the trim covers.
Before installing the FR350 steering wheel in our 1991 Mustang, we compared it to the stock wheel. Notice how the FR350 steering wheel’s grip is thicker for a sportier feel.
Compared to our worn leather, the FR350’s simulated leather and micro-suede grip felt great in our hands.
We resumed the installation process by threading the OEM wiring harness through the FR350’s opening and loosely installing the wheel over the steering column shaft.
Next, torqued the steering wheel bolt to 30 ft-lb.
Finally, we installed the air bag.
We installed the SVE simulated leather 5-speed shift knob in place of the stocker.
Latemodel Restoration Supply’s FR350 steering wheel and shift knob worked wonders for the look and feel of our 1991 Mustang’s interior. Everything fit like stock, and we were done in about 90 minutes. Excellent!
